Noisy Neighbourhood? Here’s How to Soundproof Your Apartment

by SA Homes, Posted on 18/10/2017

As with every other kind of housing or accommodation, living in an apartment in Palakkad also has its pros and cons. One of the disadvantages is the free flow of sound streaming into your flat from the neighbouring apartments or the corridor – loud conversations, music, furniture being dragged, the mixie or blender whirring, kids playing, the thump of shoes on the floor, and so on. Gone is your cozy afternoon nap, or your quiet evening or morning read. But fear not, all is not lost. There are steps you can take to minimize the incoming sound, and ensure peace in your home. These are simple things you can do yourself, and you’ll find that you can also enhance the aesthetics of your apartment.

Of course, you first need to identify the source of the noise – that will help you fix the problem effectively.

  • Block noise traveling between the rooms in your apartment: sound tends to bounce off hard surfaces but is absorbed by soft materials. So you can apply material like cotton, foam or even felt to the walls, doors or the ceiling directly, depending on where the noise is coming from. Having upholstered furniture, using room dividers like wooden screens, thick curtains and switching on a fan or air conditioner will help you with this.
  • Install a door sweep if there is a significant gap between your main door and the flooring, to minimize sound coming in from the corridors into your Palakkad flat.
  • Block sound coming through windows: Rather than single glass pane windows, switch to triple pane windows. This is effective in blocking sound. If that’s not possible, install multi-layered or blackout curtains. Check carefully for gaps around windows, and seal them. You can also purchase a sound blocking quilt for peaceful silence whenever you need it.
  • If your upstairs neighbor has a penchant for dropping their shoes down at odd hours, request them to carpet their flooring to reduce the sound impact.
  • If too much sound comes in through the next door apartment, you can stack furniture against walls – especially cupboards, bookshelves, etc., and add thick foam behind the furniture for more effective sound blocking.

You can always politely request your neighbours to turn down volumes and make sure you do the same for them. Apartment living is all about peaceful co-existence and cooperation.
